Iowa State looks to take the next step in 2020 and the Cyclones just may have the firepower to do just that. Head Coach Matt Campbell enters his 5th season with sky high expectations even though the 2019 season ended on a down note with a loss to Notre Dame in the Camping World Bowl. Iowa State only welcomes back five starters on Offense but expects great results in 2020. Junior Quarterback Brock Purdy and sophomore Running Back Breece Hall are both back to lead the way. The Wide Receiving Unit only returns one starter in junior Tarique Milton while junior Tight End Charlie Kolar returns as well to give Purdy another option in the passing game. The Offensive Line only returns one starter as well but there will be much more depth this coming season. The Defense returns nine starters on Defense including three starters on the Defensive Line. The Defensive Line will be led by a pair of Defensive Ends in senior JaQuan Bailey and junior Zach Petersen. The Linebacking Unit returns two starters in junior Middle Linebacker O’Rien Vance and junior Outside Linebacker Mike Rose while senior Outside Linebacker Jake Hummel will chip in as well. The Secondary is loaded with talent as all four starters return including a pair of junior Cornerbacks in juniors Anthony Johnson and Datrone Young. The Special Teams Unit returns intact with both senior Kicker Connor Assalley and senior Punter Joe Rivera both back. Iowa State looks to clear the final hurdle and compete for the Big 12 Championship. Can the Cyclones accomplish this feat in 2020? It will be difficult but possible. Look for the Cyclones to come agonizingly close but fall short. I predict Iowa State to go 9-4 in 2020.
